Many of today’s weddings seem to be all about creating and crafting bits and pieces to make the wedding celebrations very personal and in particular to give the chosen venue their personal stamp.
Creating decorations is a relatively simple way to do this and although there are a few decorating professionals, it isn’t the big business and in the same league that specialist photographers, florists and cake makers are.
Preparing for the day itself in this way, may have replaced making things for the bottom drawer and the trousseau that brides always did historically. The bottom drawer was where clothes and linen were stored in preparation for her marriage. The linen might have included table cloths, tray cloths and serviettes that she embroidered or laced, along with bedlinen and pillow cases.
The kinds of things that brides might make for their wedding day festivities include, but of course are not limited to table decorations and table plans, bunting, playlists for the dancing, flower arrangements from a big bucket of delivered flowers, silk flower bouquets and button holes and so on.
Bunting is still big for country themed weddings and is relatively simple to make with a sewing machine and a good pair of pinking shears. It can transform a marquee or a function room in a way that works better than balloons (they don’t pop for starters). Bunting can be re-used too for anniversary parties or christenings further down the line, particularly if the colour scheme is a pretty favourite one. Spring yellows, greens, pinks and blues are very popular for spring and summer weddings. A lovely mix of florals, spots and stripes is very effective.
We have had lots of brides using bunting and we are big fans. Many of our brides are really creative with their table plans and signage too. And we’ve also had balloons and wonderfully big pompom creations! Look at this lovely picture from Russell Lewis which shows off the Banqueting Hall here at Brinsop Court manor house.
