This weekend sees the start of a local Dark Skies Festival, a weekend of astronomy based in Hay on Wye. 2014 is the first year for this event and it sounds exciting! The Brecon Beacons is one of only a handful of places in the world that has official Dark Skies status and details of the others can be found on the Dark Skies website.
There is a variety of events and speakers at the festival and children and adults will find plenty to inform and amuse themselves.
At Brinsop on a night with no moonlight it can be very dark and with little local light pollution the view of the skies filled with stars is a sight worth seeing especially if you generally live where there is lots of light pollution.
With the right smart phone apps and maps of the sky and on a clear night, you should be able to pick out all the usual constellations including the North Star and Orion’s Belt. Occasionally we have even had glimpses of the Northern Lights.
What could be more romantic than sitting in the hot tub under those stars sipping something delicious, a glass of champagne being the cliché but on a cold evening, perhaps a mug of hot chocolate might hit the spot!
We’d love you to head to Herefordshire for a mid week break, some luxury self catering and a gaze at the night sky!
