A Brinsop Wedding

The Black Tie Winter Wedding of Jen & Larry

As we start to say goodbye to the British Summer, (which has been amazing), here at Brinsop Court we are busy preparing to welcome all our lovely Autumn and Winter Bride and Grooms. This has got us thinking and reminiscing, remembering all the gorgeous weddings celebrated last year at Brinsop Court, one of these being Jen & Larry, who celebrated their wedding with us on Saturday 4th November 2017.

A perfect winters’ day, the Sun beaming down on Brinsop Court, but the air so crisp and the fog settled on the hills in the backdrop. Jen and Larry, a Nurse and a Paramedic from Gloucester created their wedding here at Brinsop Court, and it was an absolute pleasure to host such a brilliant day.

An elegant black tie wedding weekend, chic yet nothing too fussy. Something a little bit different and unique but filled with their own personal touches. Accents of neutrals and gold against the handsome black tuxedos were so perfectly suited to Brinsop Court. From the guests creating their own personal cocktails, to the exquisite flowers designed by Issy and Bella, the delicious menu served by A2Zest to the three tiered Marshmallow Rice Krispie wedding cake!

When and where did you get engaged? We were on holiday in Reykjavik, Iceland, 15th November 2016. We had had a fabulous day of visiting waterfalls, geysers and snorkelling in the freezing cold waters between the tectonic plates. We came back to our hotel and went out for some ice-cream (it was very cold and definitely not ice cream weather, but we went anyway!) and on the way back to our hotel we walked around the snowy marina, there was nobody around and it looked beautiful, all lit up with the full moon. Larry proposed and I said ”YES!”.  We made our way back to the bar in the hotel and had a beer each!

How and why did you choose Brinsop Court? We found Brinsop court after searching the internet. As soon as we walked in, we knew it was the one. It had a lovely homely feel to it, which is what we were looking for. It felt like a home from home.

How long did it take to plan the wedding? It took approximately 10 months, we didn’t start until around Feb / March time.

Was there inspiration or theme for your wedding?  Simple and elegant was our inspiration! Brinsop was so beautiful that it didn’t need lots of decorations. We kept it simple and low key. Black tie theme for the groom and wedding party. We also offered it to our guests if they wished to join in and for ladies to wear evening dress. Everyone made such an effort and they all looked stunning!

What was your favourite part of the day? Actually getting married!

What advice would you give anyone planning their big day? Don’t worry about the little things, nobody will notice or remember. Don’t forget what it is all about…..actually getting married! Create a spread sheet on your laptop, keep track of costs and what has been done and what is left to do! Larry was obsessed with it! Spend time with your new husband or wife on the day. Larry and I felt very strongly about this from the start. We didn’t want to spend it apart keeping everyone else entertained. Take some time out to be alone together or have a drink with friends.

Where did you spend your Honeymoon? We have just returned from Japan where we travelled around for about two and a half weeks. We had an amazing time, ate some great food, met lovely people and are looking forward to returning one day in the future.  After the wedding weekend, we went to Mousehole, Cornwall for a week just the two of us to relax and reflect on the wedding! We sat in front of the fire with a bottle of fizz and opened our cards and presents. A perfect week of beach walks, pubs and relaxation.

Gold crackle glass vase with a small candle. Gold crackle glass vase with cream bloom carnations. Gold ribbon wrapped around napkins. No menu cards. Name cards designed and created by Grooms Mum (Jayne Humphries).

We wanted to do something a little bit different, so instead of a traditional glass of fizz for the toasting drink after the speeches, we decided everyone could make their own cocktail at the table!  Glassware, barware and cocktail shakers were provided on the tables and guests had two cocktails to choose from, a caipirinha and a Charlie Chaplin. Once everyone was seated, bottles of spirits were delivered to the table with ice buckets and accompaniments – a great ice breaker, everyone got involved and loved the idea!

The Cake: Our fabulous wedding cake was made by Vicky Singer (Jens sister and bridesmaid).  We had a very large, three tiered marshmallow, toffee and chocolate rice crispy cake! All of our guests loved it and couldn’t believe the size of it and that it was all made of rice crispies! It was simply decorated with ribbon and bloom carnations. It was delicious!
